Episode #13: Flyboys / Top Ten Desert Island Movies

World War I is a conflict that has received surprisingly little time on theater screens in recent years. Flyboys is an attempt to change that. Flyboys follows the exploits of a small group of American volunteers who go to France to fly against the Germans. These aviation pioneers essentially become the world’s first fighter pilots. Is Flyboys a grand film about war and its effects on people and nations or is it just another action flick with the requisite love story and dazzling effects sequences, and if it is, is it worth your time anyway? Episode #11: The Illusionist

On this installment of 2 Guys and a Film, we take a look at The Illusionist, the turn of the 20th century drama starring Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti and Jessica Biel. This unconventional tale is writer/director Neil Burger’s loose adaptation of the Steven Millhauser short story “Eisenheim the Illusionist.” How does this “smaller” film fit into what we have often billed as a disappointing summer movie season? Episode #10: Remake Roundup - King Kong

This week, we introduce a new feature to the show - the “Remake Roundup.” It seems that every year, Hollywood rehashes, remakes or reimagines films from years gone by. In this segment of the show, we will compare an original film with its modern counterpart. In our first installment, we take a look at King Kong, one of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American Films of all time.

In 1933, director Merian C. Cooper stunned Depression-era audiences with his King Kong. The size and scope of the visual effects were something no one had really seen before. Kong ‘33 is a film that has inspired generations of filmmakers and special effects masters. One such filmmaker is director Peter Jackson. In fact, Jackson possesses thelargest collection of authentic Kong memorabilia in the world. In 2005, he presented the world with his updated version of his favorite film. King Kong hit theaters with a bang. The spectacle and scope of the film was immense…but how does it compare to the original? Does it live up to the reputation of the 1933 version? Does Peter Jackson successfully capture the imagination of audiences as Merian C. Cooper did in 1933? Stephen and Zack have differing opinions. Download Episode #10 now to hear our thoughts!!

Episode #9: Invincible

Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear, is based upon the true story of Vince Papale (played by Wahlberg). When new Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil (Kinnear) holds open tryouts, Papale realizes a childhood fantasy when he actually gets the opportunity to play for his hometown NFL team. At first glance, Invincible appears to be the standard Hollywood motivational sports film about the downtrodden team or athlete that rises above it all and achieves victory, all while carrying the hopes and ambitions of a city on their shoulders. Does it successfully implement the formula of films like Hoosiers, Rudy, Rocky and Cinderella Man or does it fall flat? That’s right - the much-delayed Episode 9 is now available!! Download now to hear our thoughts on Invincible, as well as our first Top 10 list: Top 10 Summer Blockbusters.

Our apologies for the delay in posting this week’s episode. Insanely busy schedules for both of us plus a nasty cold/virus for Zack stood in our way…
