Episode #29: Batman / Shyamalan Marathon Awards

On this week’s show, we have another entry in our series of “Remame Roundups” - Batman. These films are less remakes though than they are reinterpretations of the same character. Batman has had numerous incarnations on the big screen, from the intentional camp of the 1966 film, to the stylized vision of Tim Burton’s 1989 version and Christopher Nolan’s more serious/grounded Batman Begins. Plus, we run over the best and worst from our M. Night Shyamalan marathon. Finally, we have a mini-review of Norbit, though no doubt you have all already rushed out to see this cinematic gem. Download Episode #29 now.

Spoiler Warning: If you have not seen any of the films in our Shyamalan marathon (particularly The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable or Signs), you might want to skip the “Awards” segment of the show.

Episode #20: The Nativity Story

The Nativity Story is the second major motion picture in recent history to attempt to reach the nation’s Christian audience by realistically portraying a famous Biblical event. Mel Gibson’s 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ was a hugely successful endeavor, fueled largely by huge church audiences that packed movie theaters across the country. It was heralded by many for accurately depicting the final hours of Jesus Christ. The Nativity Story tells the other end of the story, beginning with a young Mary becoming “engaged” to Joseph and ending with the birth of Jesus. It is a familiar story and one that has been told in innumerable ways throughout the years. Does The Nativity Story effectively convey the “Christmas Story” or is it merely a rehash of familiar events? Download Episode #20 to hear our thoughts. Plus, a mini-review of The Fountain and Stephen checks out a film from his “Most Ashamed” list.

Episode #10: Remake Roundup - King Kong

This week, we introduce a new feature to the show - the “Remake Roundup.” It seems that every year, Hollywood rehashes, remakes or reimagines films from years gone by. In this segment of the show, we will compare an original film with its modern counterpart. In our first installment, we take a look at King Kong, one of the American Film Institute’s Top 100 American Films of all time.

In 1933, director Merian C. Cooper stunned Depression-era audiences with his King Kong. The size and scope of the visual effects were something no one had really seen before. Kong ‘33 is a film that has inspired generations of filmmakers and special effects masters. One such filmmaker is director Peter Jackson. In fact, Jackson possesses thelargest collection of authentic Kong memorabilia in the world. In 2005, he presented the world with his updated version of his favorite film. King Kong hit theaters with a bang. The spectacle and scope of the film was immense…but how does it compare to the original? Does it live up to the reputation of the 1933 version? Does Peter Jackson successfully capture the imagination of audiences as Merian C. Cooper did in 1933? Stephen and Zack have differing opinions. Download Episode #10 now to hear our thoughts!!

Episode #9: Invincible

Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg and Greg Kinnear, is based upon the true story of Vince Papale (played by Wahlberg). When new Philadelphia Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil (Kinnear) holds open tryouts, Papale realizes a childhood fantasy when he actually gets the opportunity to play for his hometown NFL team. At first glance, Invincible appears to be the standard Hollywood motivational sports film about the downtrodden team or athlete that rises above it all and achieves victory, all while carrying the hopes and ambitions of a city on their shoulders. Does it successfully implement the formula of films like Hoosiers, Rudy, Rocky and Cinderella Man or does it fall flat? That’s right - the much-delayed Episode 9 is now available!! Download now to hear our thoughts on Invincible, as well as our first Top 10 list: Top 10 Summer Blockbusters.

Episode #7: World Trade Center

2006 has seen two dramatic film representations of the horrific atrocities of September 11, 2001. While some argue it is too soon for such big screen reminders, the fact remains that Hollywood has always reflected upon major historical events. This week, we take a look at the latest film, Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center. Starring Nicolas Cage, Maria Bello, Michael Pena and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in the true story of Port Authority police officers John McLoughlin and Will Jimeno, who were trapped in the rubble of the Twin Towers. Does Stone resist his usual impulses of conspiriacy, political undertones and over-the-top characterizations, or does he treat the subject matter with respect and dignity? Episode #3: Cinderella Man (DVD)

Should Cinderella Man sit aside such classic boxing films as Rocky, Raging Bull and On The Waterfront? One this week’s show, Zack and Stephen re-examine this movie and see if it deserved the quick box office knock out that it received.
